So we ask her for salsa and points at a small salsa bar and says «you get your own salsa» We place the order, chicken taquitos and costillitas con chile verde. She then brings the drinks with a basket of stale chips. The only waitress that’s there, hands us the menus and takes our drink order. Well let me tell you this… I should of just stayed home and started my diet! We walked into this place, we sat down in this little table for three. Yesterday went out to lunch with with the hubby and we decided to try this restaurant. This is one of those good little LA finds! Just lovely. The cured beef was excellent, and came with a nice seared green onion and nopales. The black mole chicken was fresh and tender and the sauce was totally addictive. It was so fresh, tasted great, and was made with care and attention to craft. I think there was some fresh oregano on them? Then the service was sooo fast. The salsa bar was simple but tasted really fresh, and the pickled carrots/​onions were clearly homemade and really delicious. The restaurant was clean, comfortable, and colorful. That attention to detail really added to my visit. The gentleman who served us even noticed the table we chose was a bit small for us after our dishes came out, and ushered us to a bigger table. Really attentive, and I just had the sense that the people there care about their restaurant and appreciate their customers. I was really pleasantly surprised! To start with the service was excellent, even though we came in at a really random hour. This place is really good! We see it on the way to the library and went in for lunch one day not knowing what to expect. The owner and his staff are very friendly and kind, hard work pays off… I always end up getting the same plates at oaxacan restaurants because it’s easy to just fall into the same habit, but please give me recommendations… I wanted to try the Birria, which it goat bbq I think but they only do it on the weekends, I’ll be back for that.

The freshly made corn tortillas are so good, thin and huge, like 10″, warm. This is what food should taste like fresh. I had the thin skirt steak with beans, rice and grilled cactus. I ordered their appetizer tortilla with beans and fresh cheese, don’t know the name and was embarrassed to ask, because she told me the name twice already, the tortilla was made in front of me, so fresh, it was awesome. The salsa was One of the best green salsas I’ve had in a long time. To start off they brought me some chips and I helped myself to the salsa bar. Came here expecting a unique dining experience and was.I love oaxacan joints and when ever I see one I always try to stop, this one has been on my list. Food didnt stand out to me, restaurant was very warm, nothing special. Quaint restaurant with an interesting set dining experience. The restaurant has a whimsical decor that almost reminds me of being in a. When you enter, the restaurant is unassuming. Restaurant Gish reminds me of if fine-dining got a homey, comforting twist. We've been going to Gish for the last 8-9 months and August has been one of the most underwhelming menus. I understand people coming only this month (Aug) and leaving a not so great review. I'll give it another go and see if the new menu changes my mind.
